The first six things on the to-do list for the nursery didn’t really even have much to do with the nursery directly. We purged and organized our hall closet, bedroom closet, bathroom closet, under the bed, our entry closet, and all the kitchen cabinets. Our hope from this would be that new space created from those area’s optimization would make finding places for everything in the pantry much easier.

We put in a lot of hours over Memorial weekend and checked all those items off the list. And as you all can probably attest, the feeling after you have gotten rid of junk you did not realize you did not need and made your living spaces more functional is absolutely sensational. I kind of feel like I lost 20 pounds. Which is saying much for a pregnant chick.

The craziest part is that even with having to now store all that food in the kitchen, this is still what it looked like when we were finished.

I know! I kind of don’t believe it. Everything fits in those cupboards. In fact, we left one cupboard and one drawer totally empty for baby stuff. If you’re thinking this is mathematically impossible, I’ll divulge a few tactics we used to make it work.

The first thing I can’t emphasize enough is Dave’s and my love for routinely going through our belongings and getting rid of things we do not need. We do this maybe every six months. At the start, we probably feel like there won’t be much to ditch, but by the end we still have multiple trash bags full. Every time.

Our strategy for each closet or other storage area we organized was to take everything out. Sometimes we had to push ourselves to do it, but we are really glad we did. Taking everything out, even if it is more work made a difference because we are really seeing all the items and the empty room with fresh eyes. So yes, that included all our kitchen cabinets.

The most effective change in the kitchen was installing the hanging pot rack you can see above. We were having to use a whole cupboard for storing 2 skillets and their lids, so taking those vertical helped immensely.

We got ours at Bed, Bath & Beyond. It was originally $39.99, but was marked down 25% in store because it is a discontinued finish. Plus, a 20% coupons which are like Willy Wonka’s golden tickets.

For the lids, we used command hooks to attach them on the inside of the doors – an otherwise completely unused storage opportunity!

I also nailed up (with the tiniest nails I could possibly find) this magazine rack to store all our plastic bags and wrap type stuff. Why do we use a whole drawer for these things?

A few more small organizer purchases helped with some of the remaining drawers. I kind of hate that everyone in America has a junk drawer. Including us! But, I’m trying hard to fight it.

AND THE FOOD! This is its new home. I love not having to walk around the dining table to get ingredients while I’m cooking. And I am still so blown away that it could all fit in this cupboard. It was being stored so inefficiently on those pantry shelves.

    I’m in awe! So awesome to see this done in a non too-good-to-be-true way! I am getting married in September and the apartment we will be living for the first year or so is roughly 500 sq. ft., so I am soaking up every piece of simple storage advice I can find. Also, it’s blowing my mind that you make such gourmet foods with what looks like a really modest amount of items. Any chance you could share how? For some reason I always feel like I have to blow my grocery budget every week to make healthy, unique meals. Thanks for your blog! It’s always the first one I check.

      Thanks Hannah! I’m not totally sure how we do it either, but I will think about that and maybe include it in a post : )

  • I am SO impressed! We live in a tiny NYC apartment with a galley kitchen and it’s a constant exercise in efficiency of space. I LOVE the idea of putting lids inside the doors!

    Oh, and we also do the Biannual Stuff Purge. It feels so good. And HOW does so much junk just appear!?
